It’s undeniable that our phones are a part and parcel of our lives – studies have shown that most people between the ages of 18 to 39 check their phones a whopping 150 times a day!

This has given rise to the new phenomenon known as “tech neck”: the constant bending of our necks to look at our phones, in turn giving rise to unsightly neck creases, sagging neck skin, and drooping jowls over time.

And it’s not just about vanity. Studies have shown that with every 15 degrees your head inclines forward, your neck has to bear an additional weight of 5 kg on average, causing unnecessary strain on your back and neck muscles.

So what can we do about this?

Generally, prevention is key:

  1. Put an end to bad phone habits
Let’s be real: we all know using our phones less could reduce tech neck, but realistically, that’s not going to happen. What we can do instead is to put an end to bad phone habits. Try holding your phone higher, closer to eye level, instead of straining your neck and looking down.

  3. Treat your neck like you would your face
When you go about your daily skincare routine, don’t forget your neck as well! Use a firming cream as a preventative measure against fine lines and creases.

What if the damage is already done?

Don’t fret just yet, there are still some things we can do to reverse existing damage!

  1. Ultherapy
Think of this as a non-surgical, non-invasive facelift: this treatment uses ultrasound energy to lift and tighten skin while stimulating collagen production.

When it comes to tech neck, Ultherapy can help to smooth out fine lines on the neck, and lift sagging skin.

Additionally, Ultherapy can be used to firm up other parts of the face:

    • Lift eyebrows and eye area
    • Tighten and firm cheeks
    • Reduce double chins
    • Lift sagging skin around the jawline

  2. Fillers, Botulinum Toxin Combination Treatments
Fillers and botulinum toxin injections can also be administered superficially, to reduce the depth of neck creases while tightening the skin.

These can also be combined with chemical peels, which help exfoliate dead skin cells, in turn improving fine lines.

  3. Threadlifts
A threadlift is a non-surgical method of lifting sagging skin via the insertion of ultra-fine polydioxanone (PDO) threads underneath the skin. This is great for tightening up sagging skin around the neck.

We know what you’re thinking – don’t worry! These are medical-grade threads safe enough to use during surgeries, and these threads help create a firm hold on surrounding tissues, while your body naturally responds by stimulating the production of new collagen around these threads, helping to further maintain the lifting effect.
