Always wanted to learn more about how chemical peels can rejuvenate your skin but fear the thought of how they sound? LS Aesthetic Clinic breaks it down for you: what chemical peels really are, how they work, and why there really is nothing much to fear at all.

Chemical Peels for Acne, Pigmentation | LS Aesthetic Clinic

What are chemical peels?
A chemical peel is an aesthetic treatment used to promote the growth of new, rejuvenated skin, through the application of a chemical solution, which encourages the exfoliation of dead skin cells.

What can it do for my skin?
Chemical peels can be applied to the face, neck, or hands. The benefits are multifold! They can:

  • Reduce fine lines caused by UV damage and aging

  • Reduce pigmentation (age spots, freckles, or melasma)

  • Improve the appearance of mild scars (e.g. acne scars or chicken pox scars)

  • Treat certain types of acne

  • Promote the growth of new, smooth, and rejuvenated skin

  • Improve skin texture and tone

Are chemical peels safe?
When a chemical peel is administered by an experienced doctor, it is a very safe procedure.

Do they hurt? Is there any downtime?
Chemical peels may sting slightly, but they do not cause a lot of pain. It will most likely feel like a prickly sensation that most patients report as highly tolerable.

What you feel will also depend on the type of peel you choose! The stronger the peel, the stronger the prickly sensation you are likely to feel.

The level of downtime also depends on the type of peel you choose. While mild peels have no downtime, stronger peels might see your skin peeling and a couple of days worth of downtime.

What are the different types of chemical peels?
There are essentially 3 types of chemical peels:

  1. Superficial peel: Also commonly known as the “lunchtime peel”, this form of chemical peel only penetrates the outer layers of your skin, gently exfoliating dead skin cells and rejuvenating your skin without any form of peeling or downtime. Such peels often contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA), which include naturally-occurring fruit acids such as glycolic or citric acids.

  2. Medium peel: These use trichloroacetic acid (TCA) to penetrate the outer and middle layers of your skin, and can be effective in treating moderate wrinkles, pigmentation from aging or UV damage, as well as acne.

  3. Deep peel: This is the most aggressive form of a chemical peel that penetrates several layers of skin to produce skin rejuvenation from within. This allows for a faster rate of new collagen production as compared to other peels, but also results in aggressive skin peeling and a longer downtime period. At LS Aesthetic Clinic, we do not offer or recommend deep peels as there are better treatment alternatives with less downtime.

What can I expect during a chemical peel?
While procedures vary depending on the type of peel, your skin will be cleansed thoroughly, followed by the application of a medical degreaser to ensure that the treatment area is free from any oils.

The chemical peel will be applied onto your skin for a controlled amount of time, following which your skin is cleansed with cold water or a neutralising agent to stop further chemical reactions.

How do I take care of my skin after a chemical peel?
Always, always avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun! Use a mild cleanser in your skincare routine, and make sure to apply moisturisers and sunblock liberally to speed up the healing process.

If you opt for a stronger peel, refrain from picking at any peeling skin too!

Who are good candidates for chemical peels?
Most patients who wish to treat their acne, wrinkles, or pigmentation concerns are generally suited for chemical peels, but it is advisable to give your doctor an accurate medical history, such as existing cardiac or diabetic conditions, so that your doctor can choose the chemical peel that is best suited for you.

Those with darker skin tones can run the risk of getting uneven skin tones should they opt for overly aggressive chemical peels. If this applies to you, do consult your doctor on what chemical peel works best for you! You can still have good results, but should opt for superficial or less aggressive peels just to be on the safe side.

Fillers are commonly known to address anti-aging concerns such as wrinkles and deep folds, in turn restoring a youthful appearance. In the latest of our "The Complete Guide" series, in which we answer all your burning questions about common aesthetic treatments, we dive deep into what fillers are, how they work, and it can help to turn back time.

Fillers for Anti-Aging, Wrinkles, Face Augmentation | LS Aesthetic Clinic

What are fillers?
Fillers are a type of injectable with the purpose of plumping that area and reducing the appearance of any wrinkles, folds, or lack of facial volume.

Fillers can be made of various ingredients, such as:
  • Poly-L-lactic acid: a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that is commonly found in surgery stitches and can be naturally absorbed by the body
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite: a compound that is found naturally in human bones
  • Hyaluronic acid: a naturally-occurring substance in your body that is commonly known for its anti-aging and hydrating properties.

What can fillers do for me?

Fillers can be used to fix many aging concerns, including:
  • Smoothing out laugh lines or nasolabial folds (the deep creases that run from your nose to your mouth)
  • Plumping up sunken tear troughs under the eye area
  • Smoothing out indented scars (e.g. acne scars or chicken pox scars)
  • Reducing the appearance of hollow or sunken cheeks

Fillers can also be done to achieve your desired face shape, such as:
  • Sharpening of your face with chin fillers
  • Augmenting your cheeks to restore youthful fullness
  • Plumping up thin lips

What areas can be treated by fillers?
Fillers can be safely injected into many different parts of the body, such as:
  • Cheeks
  • Chin
  • Eyebrows
  • Forehead
  • Lip
  • Nose
  • Under eyes

When do I see results? How long do results last?

Results are immediate – you will see increased volume in your treatment area after 1 treatment. How long results last depends on the type of fillers used.

Fillers that are generally made of hyaluronic acid can last up to 1 year.

Fillers that contain other ingredients such as poly-L-lactic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite can last up to 2 years.

What is the science behind fillers?

Fillers work to increase the volume of tissue layers that they are injected into. Depending on where and how the filler is administered, this can result in the reduction of wrinkles and folds, or the augmentation of your facial features such as a sharper chin or fuller lips.

Are fillers safe? Are there any side effects or downtime?
When handled by an experienced doctor, fillers are very safe and have minimal side effects. Common side effects include redness and minor swelling at the treatment area, but this should subside within a few hours after the treatment. Rarer side effects include bruising, but this should subside within 3 days.

To reduce the occurrence of side effects, it is recommended that you avoid taking substances that can hinder blood clotting prior to your filler injection, such as alcohol, omega-3 fish oil, ginseng, or Vitamin E.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Prior to your injection, either a topical anaesthetic or a regional nerve block injection will be applied to your treatment area, to make your treatment as comfortable as possible.

Once the area has been adequately anaesthesised, the filler will be safely administered into your skin. The effect is immediate with little to no downtime.

Always wondered about how your favourite Korean or Taiwanese celebrities achieve their dewy, radiant complexions? The answer lies in skin boosters (水光针) - but what are they really?

LS Aesthetic Clinic breaks it down for you: what skin boosters are, how they work, and how you can achieve glowing skin, just like your favourite star.

Skin Boosters (水光针) for Radiant Skin | LS Aesthetic Clinic

What are Skin Boosters (水光)?
Skin boosters are hydrating microinjections that are often delivered into the superficial layers of the skin. This works to naturally hydrate and smoothen your skin from within, by providing long-lasting moisture and improved firmness.

How does it work to improve my skin?
Skin boosters, or 水光针, uses stabilised HA, or a type of long-lasting hyaluronic acid, to improve hydration levels in your skin. Stabilised HA is a soft, gel-like substance that readily absorbs water, bringing hydration to where your skin needs it the most.

Skin boosters have multiple benefits for our skin:

- Restores hydration naturally to your skin from within

- Helps you achieve a radiant, dewy complexion

- Improves skin elasticity and firmness

- Smoothens fine lines and evens out irregularities in skin

- Applicable to your face, neck, hands, and décolletage

Skin Boosters (水光针) for Radiant Skin | LS Aesthetic Clinic

What is the procedure like?
A typical skin boosters treatment program comprises 3 treatment sessions, each session taking place about 2 – 4 weeks apart. However, at LS Aesthetic Clinic, we take pride in personalising our treatment programs to fit your skin condition, and this could result in a different number of treatment sessions depending on your skin needs.

Prior to your treatment, our experienced therapists will help you apply a topical anaesthetic to ensure that your procedure is as comfortable as possible. Most of our patients generally report finding the procedure very comfortable and tolerable.

Does it hurt? What’s the recovery time like?
We won’t lie – this depends on your tolerance for injections, but at LS Aesthetic Clinic, we apply numbing cream to ensure that your treatment is pain-free and as comfortable as possible.

Side effects are very rare, as hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring substance in our bodies and has been used in aesthetic treatments for many years. After the procedure, you might experience slight swelling at the injection areas, but this should subside within a few days.

New year, new you. And it’s not just your resolutions that start over on a clean slate – if you’ve been guilty of not taking good enough care of your skin, now’s the time to fight those bad habits and adopt a healthier and more pampering attitude towards your skin.

Here are the 3 resolutions we’d make for good skin:

1. RESTORE RADIANCE
We all want that dewy, “I woke up like this” complexion – here are some ways to work towards it.

Laser Treatments, Facials for Radiant Skin | LS Aesthetic Clinic

1. Sleep
Sleep is literally, beauty sleep– it does wonders for your skin! Without enough sleep, your skin’s pH levels drop, creating an imbalance. This can lead to a dehydrated complexion, redness, and an uneven skin tone.

Try setting a sleep schedule by creating target sleeping and waking times – and stick to it! Your complexion will thank you the morning after.

2. Stay Active
Exercise has been proven to clear up your complexion: when you work up a good sweat, your pores tend to dilate, and your sweat tends to expel any trapped dirt and oil, essentially clearing up your skin. Just remember to thoroughly wash your face afterwards, to prevent any dirt from getting sucked back into your pores!

3. Laser Treatments & Pampering Facials
Sometimes our skin just needs an extra boost – at LS Aesthetic Clinic, we have a number of treatments that help bring back the natural radiance of your skin:

A) Dull Complexion Combo
Revive dull skin with a combination of laser treatments and our Radiance facial, which uses a mild enzyme peel to speed up cellular turnover, lightening and brightening all skin types.

B) Intense Hydration and Brightening Treatment
This combination of skin boosters and hydradermabrasion keeps skin hydrated, giving skin an added dewy glow.

C) Eye 2 Laser
Reduce dark eye circles and fine lines around the eye area with our signature eye laser treatment.

D) Radiance/Rejuvenation Facials
These facial treatments use gentle peels to brighten the skin, treat fine lines, and deeply hydrate skin.

2. BANISH BLEMISHES
Unwanted pesky blemishes in the form of acne, freckles, or melasma can sometimes be the bane of our existence. To keep such blemishes away, here are some good habits to practise:

Laser Treatments, Light Therapy, Chemical Peels for Acne, Pigmentation | LS Aesthetic Clinic

1. Sunscreen
Applying sunscreen on a regular basis is a good first start to prevent future pigmentation problems. Remember to apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 that protects you against UVA and UVB rays.

2. Exfoliate on a regular basis
Use a gentle face scrub 2-3 times a week during your daily cleansing routine. This helps prevent pores from clogging up and allowing acne to form, as well as cleanses skin from pollutants that we face on a daily basis.

3. Laser Treatments, Light Therapy or Medical-Grade Peels
For stubborn acne or pigmentation that just won’t go away, aesthetic treatments might help in reducing their appearance. At LS Aesthetic, we have a number of tailored programmes specifically targeted at reducing stubborn blemishes:

A) Acne Combo
Keep unwanted acne at bay! Our signature combination of laser treatments, blue light therapy, and chemical peels can help to reduce acne scars, resulting in clearer, smoother skin.

B) Pigmentation Combo
Lighten freckles, melasma, and age spots with laser treatments and exfoliating chemical peels.

C) Carbon Laser Peel
Tackle acne and oily skin concerns head on with our carbon laser peel. It reduces acne breakouts, minimises pore size, and improves skin tone with no down time!

D) Skin Supplements
Oral supplements such as Pynocare and Crystal Tomato contain antioxidants that prevent the formation ofpigmentation by inhibiting melanin synthesis, effectively whitening and brightening skin.

3. TURN BACK TIME
Concerned about wrinkles or crow’s feet? Making some lifestyle changes, or a trip to the dermatologist can help greatly in reversing any tell-tale signs of aging.

Laser Treatments, Anti Wrinkle Injections, Anti-Aging Skincare | LS Aesthetic Clinic

1. R for Retinoid
Retinoids are one of the magic ingredients for anti-aging: they not only minimise the appearance of wrinkles, but also slow down the breakdown of collagen (which unfortunately tends to happen as part of the aging process) and lighten pigmentation caused by UV damage.

If you’re new to using retinoids, adopt it gradually into your skincare routine by applying it every other day or mixing it with your daily moisturiser or serum. Different people have different needs based on their skin type: some may need to use retinoids more frequently whereas some may only require it every other day.

Retinoids can be found in our day creams from our in-house medical-grade skincare range, LS Formula.

2. Cut down on sugar
Studies have shown that sugar in all forms – high fructose corn syrup, cane sugar etc. – is extremely bad for your skin. It’s known to be collagen’s worst enemy: an overload of sugar in your bloodstream can cause a chemical reaction called glycation, which happens when excess sugar molecules attach themselves to collagen fibres. This causes collagen fibres to lose its strength, in turn causing our skin to sag and be more vulnerable to UV damage and aging.

So hold back on the Coke, and you’ll be doing your skin a huge, huge favour.

3. Laser Treatments and Anti-Wrinkle Injections
To reverse deeper wrinkles or rejuvenate your skin, restorative aesthetic treatments are also an option:

A) Laser Treatments
Our signature laser skin rejuvenation programme helps to tighten skin, improve skin tone, and minimise pores.

B) Anti-Wrinkle Injections
Smooth away forehead wrinkles and frown lines with anti-wrinkle injections

C) Fillers
Achieve a younger look with minimal downtime! Fillers can reduce wrinkles, smoothen skin, and restore volume to sunken cheeks.

So in a nutshell, it’s never too late to start taking good care of your skin! We’d all like to turn back time, banish blemishes, or restore radiance to our complexion, and taking a step towards that, even if it’s just a tiny step, is a great way forward this new year.
