Fillers: 5 Things You Need To Know

Thinking about injectable fillers but still on the fence? We highlight 5 things you need to know about fillers, so you'll be able to make a more informed decision:

1. Fillers can restore lost volume & deeply hydrate skin
Fillers can help to lift sagging skin and reduce sunkenness, restoring a youthful appearance.

Fillers made of hyaluronic acid also help to deeply hydrate skin. Hyaluronic acid has the capability to absorb up to 200x its weight in water – hence when injected into the skin, dermal fillers can help to restore the plumpness and suppleness in your skin.

2. There are many different types of fillers available
Different fillers can be made from different materials - this has an effect on a filler’s properties and how long it can last for.

Some of the major filler types include:

Hyaluronic acid fillers:
  • Lasts for 6-12 months in your skin
  • Helps to hydrate and plump up skin
  • Examples: Belotero Hydro, Revanesse, Volift

Poly-L-lactic acid fillers:
  • Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that is commonly found in surgery stitches and can be naturally absorbed by the body
  • Helps stimulate collagen production
  • Can last between 1 – 2 years
  • E.g. Sculptra

Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers:
  • Calcium hydroxylapatite is a substance found naturally in human bones
  • The heaviest of all dermal fillers
  • E.g. Radiesse

Even within the main categories of HA fillers or PLLA fillers, the different brands differ, for instance, in terms of filler particle sizes – which can affect the area or depth of the ideal treatment area.

Hence, it’s best to let a doctor examine your skin condition, and understand what exactly you’d like treated so that he/she can recommend the filler best suited for your needs.

3. More is not always better
While fillers can help restore loss in volume as a result of aging, it doesn’t mean that the more fillers you inject, the better.

Sometimes, having too much fillers injected can result in what is commonly known as the pillow face phenomenon i.e. looking too puffy from too many filler injections.

Hence, when choosing a doctor, make sure you choose one that doesn’t hardsell their patients to buy more and more fillers.

4. You will not look worse if you do not continue filler injections
A common misunderstanding about fillers is that your skin will start to sag after you stop doing fillers.

Fillers actually can help to boost your skin’s natural collagen production.

What fillers (or anything, really) can’t stop is the aging process; aging is a dynamic process – as we age, our bones and muscles tend to shrink and our skin tends to lose its elasticity, in turn resulting in common age problems such as sagging skin and sunken tear troughs.

5. Fillers and botulinum toxin injections are different!
Don’t get confused between the two! The latter is mainly used for treating mild to moderate facial wrinkles, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, or glabella lines. Many patients commonly opt to do anti-wrinkle injections in conjunction with fillers to lift and rejuvenate their faces.

You may have heard all about Crystal Tomato whitening supplements and the rave reviews it’s been receiving for reducing pigmentation and brightening skin.

But you might not have heard of its sister product, Crystal Tomato Skin Clarity Cream: an under-the-radar skincare cream specifically formulated to reduce the 4 main causes of pigmentation:

  • UVA/UVB rays
  • Free radicals
  • Inflammation
  • Melanin formation

Just like that of Crystal Tomato, its effects on stubborn pigmentation spots have been scientifically proven too. In a recent clinical study, 76.5% of patients with melasma benefited from improvements of over 25% after 56 days. And after 84 days, 53% of them showed more than 50% improvements!

HOW IT WORKS

Manufactured in Spain, Crystal Tomato Skin Clarity Cream incorporates 15 active ingredients that work together to specifically inhibit the production of melanin – a.k.a. the cause of pigmentation – inside your skin cells.

One of these ingredients in particular, Tyrosinase Inhibitor Complex, is especially powerful in inhibiting an important enzyme required for the formation of melanin, in turn making it especially effective in lightening facial spots and preventing new pigmentation from forming.

What’s even better: Crystal Tomato Skin Clarity Cream contains no harsh or toxic compounds: no hydroquinone, no steroids – you can use this daily, while being reassured that your skin is in good hands!

  • Has sun filtering properties, helping to protect against UVA/UVB rays - but it's still necessary to put sunblock as your last barrier of defence against sun damage!

  • Helps lighten dark acne scars

  • Helps achieve a more even skin tone, especially for those with acne-prone skin

  • Suitable for all skin types

Here's What To Do About Singapore's Extreme UV Levels

We’re so used to thinking “Danger!” when we hear thunder, but we tend to forget that we’re just as exposed to danger on a sunny day, thanks to UV rays. UVA and UVB rays in particular, are the 2 forms of UV exposure that are highly harmful to us. How do we measure the extent of the danger from our exposure to UV rays? That’s where the UV index comes in.

The UV index – an open-ended scale from 0 upwards – informs us of the amount of damage we are doing to our skin (and eyes!) The higher the index, the more damage done to your skin, and accordingly, the less time needed for that harm to be inflicted.

Here’s a rough guide breaking down what the different UV index levels really mean:

UVI of 1-2: Low UV exposure

UVI of 3-5: Moderate UV exposure

UVI of 6-7: High UV exposure

UVI of 8-10: Very high UV exposure

Anything beyond a UVI of 11: Extreme UV exposure, i.e. skin and eye damage could occur within minutes.

Guess where Singapore stands on this spectrum? An annual average of 11.5.

Therefore, protection is key. What can we do?

Sunscreen

This is still one of the most effective ways to protect against skin cancer. Be sure to use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, and reapply every 3 hours or so.

At LS Aesthetic, we carry the TiZO2 and TiZO3 range of mineral sunscreens, which offer effective yet gentle protection against the Sun’s harmful rays. Other benefits include:

  • Free from: chemical sunscreen filters, oils, dyes, fragrances, or PABA
  • Offers broad spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays
  • Photostable: these sunscreens do not break down when exposed to sunlight
  • Lightly tinted formula: fades to match your natural skin tone
  • Water resistant versions available

Not just a whitening oral supplement, Crystal Tomato acts as a natural sunscreen against UVA/UVB rays to protect against UV damage and sunburns. Best of all, it’s a 100% natural food supplement – meaning that it’s safe for long-term consumption.

Protective Clothing/Items

Other means of sun protection include wearing hats and sunglasses, and carrying umbrellas. Ensure that your sunglasses protect you from UV rays!

Look for sunglasses that offer 100% UV protection or those labelled as “UV 400” – this means that you’re protected from all light rays with wavelengths up to 400 nanometers.

As for umbrellas, look for those that are able to block 99% of the sun’s UV rays. Such umbrellas are made of advanced fabrics with the ability to block out both UVA and UVB rays.
