Teenage Acne & Ways To Tackle It

It’s like a rite of passage, almost – more than 85% of teenagers are commonly afflicted with clogged pores, blackheads, pus-filled acne. It can chip away at one’s confidence, especially when taking into account the struggles that teenagers face during puberty.

Acne basically forms when acne-causing bacteria is trapped inside your pores, most likely due to a buildup of sebum and dead skin cells. This causes acne-causing bacteria to multiply, eventually causing the acne breakouts that we tend to see.

All hope is not lost though! With latest medical advancements, various acne conditions – ranging from mild to severe cases – can be treated.

Acne Treatments - Carbon Laser Peels, Chemical Peels | LS Aesthetic Clinic

What can be done?

Carbon Laser Peels & Other Acne Laser Treatments
Laser treatments are particularly effective in treating mild to severe conditions. They generally harness the power of focused light energy to minimise pore size, smooth out acne scars, and promote the growth of new, smooth skin.

Our carbon laser peel and Dual Yellow lasers are particularly effective in treating various acne conditions. Our carbon laser peel is good for lightening acne scars, controlling sebum production, and reducing all types of acne breakouts while our Dual Yellow lasers are good for stimulating collagen production, improving skin texture and tone, and reducing facial redness.

And the best part? Both have no downtime! Feel free to carry on with your daily routine immediately after your treatment.

Acne Facials
At LS Aesthetic, we offer a series of customisable acne facial packages that help to deeply cleanse clogged pores, clear comedones, and inhibit acne growth. This can be done through the use of specialised machines, such as microdermabrasion, hydradermabrasion, ultrasonic cleansing. All facials come with a mask specifically suited for acne at the end of the treatment.

Our acne facials can also be combined with laser treatments for better results.

Chemical Peels
These are chemical solutions applied by Dr Kok to your skin and left on for a controlled amount of time, before being cleansed off. This helps to promote the growth of new skin and reduce acne scars.

One of the negative things about chemical peels in the past was the downtime – the stronger peels tended to cause one’s skin to peel for a week. But with latest medical advancements, we now offer acne chemical peels with no downtime!

Light Therapy
Light therapy, specifically blue light at an exact wavelength of 415nm, has been scientifically proven to improve acne and acne blemishes. The blue light is particularly effective in killing acne-causing bacteria, with no downtime and disruption to your daily activities.

Light therapy can be done on its own, or done in combination with acne facials.

Acne Skincare & Topical Creams
Acne-prone skin tends to be oilier and more sensitive. Hence, those suffering from acne generally require specialised acne cleansers and creams to take care of their skin daily while keeping their acne conditions under control.

LS Formula, our medical-grade skincare range, has a wide range of acne products to treat mild to severe acne conditions.

Oral Medication
If the above options are not strong enough, acne medication can also be prescribed. Such antibiotics can help kill acne bacteria and reduce inflammation in more severe acne cases.

Safe and effective treatment of your acne condition begins with a consultation. At LS Aesthetic, Dr Kok understands the distress acne can cause - he will examine your skin and recommend a personalised acne treatment protocol specifically tailored to your acne condition.

5 Common Signs of Aging & The Real Reasons Why

There comes a point when we start to notice the first signs of crow’s feet at the corners of our eyes, or when our face doesn’t feel as lifted as before.

But aging is a dynamic process: so while we can’t prevent aging forever, there are ways to reduce common signs of aging and age gracefully.

Read on for the 5 common signs of aging and what non-surgical treatments you can do to minimise them.

1. Sunken Eyes
Our skull is a major supporting structure for our facial features, especially around our eye area. But when we age, our bones shrink – this is why we get shorter as we grow older!

Our skull is no exception, and our eye sockets tend to widen as we age. This results in reduced support around our eye area, giving rise to a common sign of aging – sunken eyes.

Sunken eyes can be reversed with tear trough fillers, which can help to plump up the eye area. This gives you a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance. Read more about fillers and what you can expect during the procedure here!

2. Sagging Skin (Especially at the lower face)
The fats in our faces are actually compartmentalised – this is how your cheek fats stay at your cheeks and don’t spread downwards towards your neck, for instance. While a youthful face has fats allocated at the right places, our fats tend to spread out and sag downwards as we age due to the weakening of the compartment barriers.

Furthermore, with age, our facial muscles tend to lose their firmness and elasticity. The combination of these 2 factors tends to result in sagging skin, especially in the lower face area.

Fortunately, there are a few non-surgical treatment options for this:

A. Ultherapy
Think of this as a non-surgical facelift with ultrasound: this US FDA-approved procedure uses focused ultrasound energy to lift and tighten skin while stimulating collagen production. Ultherapy is also great for lifting drooping skin around the eye area, giving you a more refreshed, wide-eyed look.

B. Threadlifts
These help to lift sagging cheeks, through the safe insertion of PDO threads under your skin. These threads, which are commonly used in cardiovascular surgeries, are safe, biodegradable, and help to stimulate new collagen growth, helping to lift and firm up sagging skin.

Threadlifts are sometimes also used to help achieve a V-shaped face.

C. Fillers
Sagging skin can lead to the appearance of nasolabial folds or an overall sunken appearance – fortunately these can be reversed with poly-L-lactic acid fillers. These fillers help to boost collagen production and restore your skin’s inner structure and volume.

D. Dermalift
For those with mild to moderate cases of sagging, Dermalift could be an option for you! It’s an instant skin tightening and lifting procedure pioneered by a renowned South Korean plastic surgeon, Dr. Lee Young Seob.

Dermalift involves the injection of diluted Dysport – a type of botulinum toxin – into your skin, and this has the effect of giving one’s face a lifted and more youthful appearance.

Having been trained by Dr Lee Young Seob himself, Dr. Kok is highly experienced in the Dermalift procedure. Click here to learn more!

3. Age Spots & Other Pigmentation
With age, your skin tends to be thinner, paler, and more transclucent.

Hence, along with accumulated UV exposure over the years, unwanted pigmentation starts to show on your skin, especially in sun-exposed areas such as your cheeks.

Fortunately, age spots, melasma, and other forms of pigmentation can be safely reduced with Nd:YAG laser treatments. And the best part is, latest technologies allow pigmentation to be treated with little to no downtime!

No more peeling skin, no more hiding out at home after your treatment; just simply apply makeup (and sunblock) after your treatment and you’re good to go!

4. Wrinkles
Wrinkles are a common sign of aging, and naturally form as a result of thinning skin and reduced collagen and elastin formation. This results in a weakened skin support structure, causing your skin to crease and wrinkle.

Environmental and lifestyle factors can also contribute to the onset of wrinkles, such as prolonged UV exposure or smoking habits.

Wrinkles can generally be treated with botulinum toxin injections. Those work by reducing muscle contractions, allowing facial muscles to relax, thus reducing facial lines.

Read more about it here.

5. Dry Skin
Have you ever felt like no matter how much moisturiser you apply, your skin still feels dry?

This is (unfortunately) part of the aging process, as our hyaluronic acid (HA) production levels decline, making our skin appear duller and less dewy than before.

A great way to restore HA levels to our skin is through HA skin boosters. These are delivered through a series of microinjections that help to restore hydration to your skin, from within.

Other benefits include:

  • Improved skin elasticity and firmness
  • Reduction of fine lines
  • Smoother skin texture and tone
  • More radiant complexion

Aging Gracefully Without Plastic Surgery - What Can I Do?

Aging gracefully doesn’t necessarily mean getting rid of every single wrinkle, or undergoing a massive facelift surgery to look 20 years younger. But every now and then, a bit of help regarding our sagging skin or sunken eyes couldn’t hurt.

If you’ve always wanted to turn back time but can’t stand the thought of surgery, we’ve listed several non-surgical options for the different aging problems you might want to treat:

Wrinkles
One of the most common signs of aging, wrinkles tend to appear around the forehead and eye area (crow’s feet, frown lines) as well as around the mouth area (lip lines or dimpled chins) – unsurprisingly, since these are the facial muscles we tend to use the most often!

Anti Wrinkle Injections | LS Aesthetic Clinic

Mild to moderate wrinkles can be easily treated with botulinum toxin injections – that’s your Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin for you. These are the different brands of botulinum toxin injections available in the market!

For more on botulinum toxin injections, click here.

Sunken Eyes
This is namely due to our bones shrinking with age – our skull being no exception. As a result, our eye sockets tend to widen, and without proper bone support, our undereye fats tend to sink in, resulting in that all-to-recognisable hollow between our eye and upper cheek.

This can be treated with fillers, which help to hide the volume loss in the undereye area.

Filler Injections for Sunken Tear Troughs, Sunken Eyes | LS Aesthetic Clinic

Here’s what to expect: just before the injection, either a topical anaesthetic cream or a regional nerve block injection will be applied to the treatment area. Once the area has been adequately anaesthetized, the filler will be safely injected into your skin. The effect is immediate with little to no downtime.

Nasolabial Folds
This too can be treated with fillers!

Sagging Lower Face
When we grow old, it’s not just our skin that’s affected. The aging process affects our entire facial structure: our skin, muscles, fats, and bones. (More on that here) And the effects of gravity don’t quite help either.

Anti-Aging Treatments, Threadlifts, Fillers, Anti-Wrinkle Injections | LS Aesthetic CLinic
It’s important to consult an experienced doctor, who has the anatomical knowledge to determine what’s causing the sagging: is it just loose sagging skin, or is it due to the weakening of the muscle and fat structures in your face?

Depending on the doctor’s assessment, there are a few anti-aging treatments you can opt for:

Threadlifts
Threadlifts are a non-surgical method of facial lifting, through the safe insertion of polydioxanone threads (PDO) under the skin.

They can be used to lift sagging skin on the face and neck, reduce double chins, and achieve a V-shaped face.

Some of the benefits of threadlifts, at a glance:

  • Lift sagging skin on the face & neck
  • Reduce double chins
  • V-shaped face and sharper facial features
  • Enhanced collagen production
  • Safe, non-invasive procedure
  • Minimal downtime

These threads stimulate the growth of new collagen, which helps to lift and firm up sagging skin. And don’t worry, they’re safe! These are medical-grade threads that are commonly used in open-heart surgeries.

For more on threadlifts and FAQ, click here.

Ultherapy
Ultherapy uses the power of ultrasound to tighten loose skin, while smoothening wrinkles on the face, neck and chest.

Ultherapy for Skin Lifting & Tightening and Collagen Production

It delivers focused pulses of ultrasound energy to the same deep muscle plane that plastic surgeons usually work on during a facelift surgery (aka the SMAS), but without any incisions or cuts to the skin.

This delivery of ultrasound energy triggers the body’s collagen regeneration process, and the new collagen produced over time gradually lifts skin while smoothening out fine lines and wrinkles.

Watch how it works here.

Dermalift
This is a skin tightening and lifting procedure using Dysport – a type of botulinum toxin. This procedure works by injecting diluted Dysport into the skin, which tightens the skin and in turn gives one’s face a lifted appearance.
