What is
Ultherapy? Think of Ultherapy as a non-surgical, ultrasound face lift - this non-invasive, U.S. FDA approved aesthetic treatment uses ultrasound energy to lift skin, tighten skin, and smooth wrinkles and lines on the face, neck, and chest.
What are the
benefits of Ultherapy?
- Non-invasive
- Skin tightening, skin firming, and skin lifting effects
- Stimulates
the body's natural collagen production
- Safe,
U.S. FDA-approved procedure
- Measurable
results after 1 procedure
- Minimal
downtime
How does
Ultherapy work?
Ultherapy delivers focused
ultrasound energy to the same deep tissue planes as those treated during a
surgical facelift, but without any incisions or major disruption to the surface
of the skin.
Through this delivery of
ultrasound energy, Ultherapy creates micro-coagulation points at 3 depths below
the skin's surface. This triggers a regenerative process under the skin by
stimulating the body's natural production of new collagen. Over a span of 2-3
months, the regenerative process gradually lifts skin and tightens skin on the face
and neck as well as smoothens lines and wrinkles on the chest.
Ultherapy also uses
ultrasound imaging, which allows doctors to see the tissue layers being
treated. This ensures that the ultrasound energy is delivered to the skin
safely and in an optimal manner.
When will I
see results? How long will the results last? Ultherapy has been proven by many clinical studies to achieve skin tightening and lifting. In 1 clinical study, 86% of patients were deemed to have achieved clinically significant lifting results.
While some patients see an initial lifting effect, the ultimate results of Ultherapy gradually build up over the next few months, as part of the collagen regeneration process that gradually lifts and tightens skin on the face, neck, and chest.
As your skin continues its natural aging process, you may want to schedule additional treatments to maintain initial results. Dr. Kok will be able to advise you on this decision during your follow-up visit.
What can I
expect during the procedure? Like other ultrasound
procedures, a water-based gel will be applied on your skin to project an image
of your skin tissue, allowing Dr. Kok to target the treatment areas effectively
and accurately. As the procedure begins, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being
delivered into your skin at consistently precise depths.
Comfort levels will vary
from person to person, but most patients generally do not feel much discomfort
during the procedure. Prior to your Ultherapy treatment, an experienced
therapist will help you apply a local anaesthetic to the treatment areas, and
Dr. Kok will take measures to ensure that your experience is as pleasant as
possible.
After the procedure, you
will be able to return to your daily activities immediately without having to
follow any special post-treatment measures. You will also be able to apply
makeup should you wish to.
Are there any
side effects of Ultherapy? Some patients might
experience skin redness, which should subside in a few hours. Others might
experience minor swelling, tingling sensations, or tenderness to the touch, but
these are temporary in nature.
Less common side effects
include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of the skin, but should
subside within a week.
Am I suited
for Ultherapy? Ultherapy is generally
suited for all skin types. The ideal candidates for Ultherapy are patients with
mild or moderate tissue laxity, or are just beginning to show signs of aging.
For best results, it is important that your skin has not been exposed to
excessive sun damage, as this can hinder the collagen regeneration process.
Ultherapy is
contraindicated for the use in patients with open lesions or wounds, severe or cystic
acne, existing keloids, mechanical, metal or dermal implants, implanted
electrical devices, pregnant or breast-feeding women, as well as those on
anti-coagulant treatment plans.
It is best to schedule a
consultation with Dr. Kok to determine if Ultherapy is the best treatment for
your needs. Ultherapy can also be combined with other treatments for optimum
results.
Is Ultherapy
safe? Ultrasound
technology has been employed in the medical industry for more than 50 years,
and is widely used for other clinical purposes as well, such as sonograms.
Ultherapy
is a well-established skin tightening procedure that has been cleared by the U.S. FDA
and been used safely in more than 350,000 treatments worldwide.
Are there any
precautions I should take before or after the procedure? Given the safety and
minimal downtime of Ultherapy, there are no special precautions required of
patients before or after the procedure.
How is
Ultherapy different from laser treatments or other aesthetic procedures? Ultherapy is the only
non-surgical skin tightening procedure that uses ultrasound imaging, allowing for
enhanced safety and precise placement of the focused ultrasound energy. For more on the difference between Ultherapy and HIFU, click
here.
Furthermore, due to the
properties of ultrasound, Ultherapy is able to bypass the surface of the skin
to deliver focused energy at deeper depths than
lasers or
radiofrequency
technologies without any incisions or disruptions to the skin.
While Ultherapy does not
duplicate the results of a surgical facelift, it is an excellent alternative
for those not ready for plastic surgery or who are showing moderate signs of
aging.
